Build Your Pup His or Her Own Bistro

Treat your pet to a dining space that’s as charming as the rest of your home. This easy DIY feeding station transforms any small space into a pint-size pet bistro. This custom eatery features a DIY awning (don’t worry, there’s no sewing required) and plenty of space for treats, toys, and accessories. It’s easy enough to put together in an afternoon and is versatile enough to work in a kitchen, mudroom, or anywhere else in the house.

How to Make a Pet Station

What You’ll Need

• Decorative shelf brackets (2)
• Café curtain rods (2)
• Drop cloth or curtain panel
• Heat-activated hem tape
• Iron
• Scissors
• Drill
• Measuring tape
• Dog feeding station or pet bowls
• Floor mat
• Wall hooks or hanging rack
• Picture frame

Step 1: Make a No-Sew Fabric Awning

A fabric awning can make your pet’s food station feel like a trendy eatery. The best part? It’s easy to make and can be fully customized with a fabric that matches your space.

Prep the fabric: To make the awning, you’ll need a piece of fabric measuring 38 x 24 inches long. Lay the fabric face-down on a surface. On both 24-inch sides, fold the fabric over about ¾-inch and secure with double-sided hem tape. This will give the edges a more finished look without actually having to sew a hem.

Create rod pockets: Keep the fabric face-down. On one of the 38-inch sides, use an iron to press the fabric ½ inch in, and then again 1-½ inches in. Secure with double-sided hem tape, creating a pocket for the curtain rod to run through. This will be the top of the awning. On the remaining edge, fold the fabric up 6 inches and use an iron to press. Open the fabric and press the lower edge ½-inch. Place hem tape across the top at 3-½ inches above the crease. Fold up carefully, and use an iron to secure the hem tape in place. Next, put hem tape under the ½-inch fold and secure with the iron. This becomes the bottom edge of the awning. The finished size of the fabric will be about 31 x 16 inches. 

Step 2: Install the Awning

To hang the awning, install two L-shape shelf brackets to the wall 24 inches apart. Screw them into the wall, making sure to attach them to a stud or use wall anchors to support the weight. Install one of the café curtain rods at the top of the two brackets, then feed the awning fabric onto the rod. Draw the second curtain rod through the bottom pocket of the curtain, then set the rod on the bottom of the shelf bracket.

Step 3: Set Up a Feeding Station

Assemble your choice of feeding station and put it against the wall below the awning. (You can use a purchased feeding station, or simply place your pet’s food and water bowls under the awning.)

Step 3: Install Hooks for Accessories

To keep your pet’s accessories organized and contained to one area, install a set of wall hooks or shelves to hold their items. Dog leashes, jars of treats, stray toys, and other items can all be neatly stored here. If you’re hanging a larger shelving unit, be sure to properly anchor the screws to the wall for safety.

Step 4: Add Finishing Touches

Now that the practical elements are in place, it’s time to give your pet’s space some personality. Hang a puppy portrait above the feeding station and add a decorative floor mat to welcome them to their new dining spot. (A machine-washable mat is a must here!) Fill the bowls with food and water, then introduce your pet to their new favorite place in the house.
