Below are the top 10 biggest outdoor living trends according to the 2025 Outdoor Living Trends Report:
- Creating seamless indoor-outdoor design. Creating a coherent space between outdoor areas and interior rooms that opens to the outside is highly appealing (56%). While this trend was higher in 2023 (73%) and 2024 (78%), pros say unified design is still dominating.
- Cooking al fresco. Outdoor kitchens aren’t going out of style any time soon, according to 40% of experts. The space can be as simple as building some permanent shelving and countertops around a grill, or a full suite of outdoor appliances and plumbing fixtures. Yet, oversized kitchens are on their way out, experts note, but pizza ovens are the top outdoor kitchen feature this year.
- Maximizing spaces with multiple purposes. Backyards serve more functions than just entertaining and relaxing these days, 31% of pros say. Outdoor spaces are being used for workout areas, dining, wellness nooks, and even offices.
- Zoning for outdoor activities. Similarly to trend No. 3, multifunctional outdoor zones call for entertaining as well. By making the area adaptable to changing needs, outdoor areas can shift from daily and weekly requirements to weekend parties or a movie under the stars. Bar areas (44%) are the second most popular trend in outdoor kitchen areas this year while pools (40%) are the top on the recreational amenity list.
- Leaning into low maintenance. Twenty-seven percent of experts say low-maintenance materials and furniture are a top trend this year, which can also play into trend No. 10—sustainability.
- Bringing the whole living room outside. A full outdoor living room—sofas, an outdoor TV, throw pillows, and all—is a big outdoor trend this year with nearly a quarter of professionals agreeing.
- Meditating on wellness. According to 21% of pros, wellness continues to take a huge piece of outdoor trends. From yoga decks to mediation spaces, wellness-centered features are trending higher, especially saunas, cold plunges, and swimming pools.
- Greening up the outdoors. Adding more greenery and plants is becoming more popular in 2025 (19%) as biophilic design also reigns inside. Pro-nature design introduces plants into outdoor living spaces to create a ‘coexisting vibe’, Fixr adds.
- Layering in comfort. To truly connect the indoor areas with the outside, 17% of experts say indoor comforts like rugs, throw blankets, and soft materials can make a patio or deck feel more like a room.
- Prioritizing sustainable measures. Sustainability has been a long-standing trend both inside and outside, and 15% say the trend is continuing as global warming anxiety mounts. Recycled materials, eco-friendly landscaping choices, and products made to last are trending among homeowners, Fixr says.
Looking ahead, other emerging trends for outdoor living in 2025 include cold plunge pools (39%); fire features (33%); smart tech integration (27%); floating decks and raised platforms (25%); outdoor audio systems (19%); water features (17%); turf grid (17%); and glass courtyards (12%).
Earthy tones (56%) top the color and material trends for outdoors this year followed by organic textures and sustainable materials both at 44%. As for patio flooring, composite decking (46%), permeable pavers (44%), and seamless indoor-outdoor flooring (39%) are top picks.
